‘I Trust I Shall Have a Good Passage’: The Business Letters of a Cardiff Sea Captain

A Talk by Dr David Jenkins

Captain Daniel Jenkins (1871 – 1922) was in command of various Cardiff based tramp steamers and his correspondence covering the years 1902 – 1911 forms a unique record of the activity of such vessels in the early part of the twentieth century. Not only did the steamers distribute export coal – at the time the world’s premium fuel source – but they also played a key role in the provision of foodstuffs and other goods vital to the growing industrial populations of the UK and northern Europe. David Jenkins has made a study of this era of trading and his book contains an introduction to the edited letters of a seagoing captain of one hundred years ago.

Well known as a first class speaker, David has made frequent media appearances in programmes such as ‘Fishlock’s Sea Stories’ (BBC Wales), ‘Coast’ (BBC2) and Huw Edwards’ series ‘The Story of Wales’. He is a prolific author in the field of Welsh maritime, transport, and industrial history. Until recently Principal Curator of Transport at Amguedfa Cymru – National Museum of Wales, David has been since his retirement been appointed by the Museum as an Honorary Research Fellow.

The lunch is open to all Club members and their guests. Members are asked to indicate their intention to attend by telephoning the office on 029 2022 0846.

Sparkling wine will be served at 12.30 to be followed by a two course lunch at 1.00 pm. There will be a fixed menu, fish being an optional alternative if requested in advance. Those attending will be invoiced subsequently for food and drink.
